About Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is normally performed to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

Besides protruding or overly large ears, there are a variety of other ear problems that can be helped with the surgery including the following:

• "lop ear," which is when the tip seems to fold down and forward;

• "cupped ear," which is usually a very small ear; and

• "shell ear," when the curve in the outer rim, as well as the natural folds and creases, are missing.

Surgery may also improve large or stretched earlobes, or lobes with large creases and wrinkles. In addition, people who were born without ears or lost them through an injury can have new ears built for them.

About the Procedure and Recovery

The exact procedure that needs to be performed will be discussed with Dr. Javaheri at the time of the consultation.  He will determine the exact problem with the ear, and will explain in detail the best procedure to be performed to the ear.  The otoplasty offers immediate and dramatic results, with will last a lifetime.

The otoplasty procedure takes about one to two hours.  A small incision is made behind the ear and the cartilage is folded back toward your head, and in some cases the cartilage can be removed.   Stitches are used and there will be no visible scar.  You will be up and around shortly after the surgery and you will be able to go home.  A support band will need to be worn for a few days to ensure protection.

Dr. Javaheri will see you post-operatively to remove the stitches and will continue to follow up with you regularly.
