Chin Augmentation and Reshaping by Dr. Javaheri can improve and enhance your facial contours and bolster your self esteem.
Chin Augmentation (Aesthetic chin augmentation, or genioplasty) is a surgical procedure to reshape or increase the size of the chin for better projection and appearance. In can balance the profile by extending the chin in relationship to the nose. For most people, the procedure will help provide a more harmonious balance to your face and features.
Dr. Javaheri will perform chin implants to bring better balance to the features of a younger patient also. For instance, a teenage girl may want her chin brought forward so that these traits are better proportioned to the rest of her face. Many patients undergo the procedure to correct an underdeveloped chin in order to have a more structured and “chiseled” look to their facial features.
Your Chin Augmentation Consultation
After examining you and taking your medical history, Dr. Javaheri will discuss the variables that influence the decisions involved in the chin augmentation procedures, such as the length, width and symmetry of the chin, and the degree of projection desired. Patients with a normal dental bite, but weak and receding chins, are the best candidates for genioplasty.
Dr. Javaheri will individualize the specific chin augmentation procedure to your desires and your exact chin deficiencies. In many cases, it is helpful to provide Dr. Javaheri with photos of people who have facial features similar to those you would like to have.
If you are a smoker you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Regular smoking constricts blood vessels resulting in decreased blood flow to a given area, which can prevent normal healing.
About the Operation
A chin augmentation can be performed using a chin implant. This is a simple procedure where an implant is placed either through the mouth or with a small incision under the chin. The chin implant is inserted and the patient can almost immediately resume normal activities. There is only minimal discomfort with this procedure which only takes about 30 minutes.
In most cases, the procedure is normally performed on an outpatient basis, and only requires a local anesthetic combined with a sedative. However, in some cases, a general anesthesia may be recommended.
Your Recovery
After your chin augmentation surgery, Dr. Javaheri will apply protective dressing to cover the chin area. You will be swollen and may experience slight discomfort and/or numbness in the area for up to two months. Medications may be prescribed to make you more comfortable. Most patients can return to work within seven days after the chin augmentation surgery and can resume most normal activities in about two weeks.

Possible Complications
Individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions, and their healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable. As with any surgical procedure, the risk of infection is always a possibility. This can be minimized by the preventative administration of antibiotics both at the time of your surgery and afterwards while in recovery. However, on occasion, mild infection can occur and is relatively common, although it usually subsides after two weeks.
One of the most common complications involves the facial implant shifting slightly out of alignment. A second operation would be required to return the implant to its proper position.
