Breast Reduction

If you are a woman with overly large breasts, breast reduction surgery can be a tremendous life-enhancing option.  Having the procedure will give you far more that just smaller, firmer breasts.  You’ll also get significant relief from many physical and emotional discomforts, a new sense of freedom in your exercise and physical activity, and the ability to wear a greater variety of clothing styles.

Large oversized breasts can cause a host of physical and psychological problems. Overly large breasts can result in shoulder, neck and back pain. In addition, they can cause distortion of posture, and in severe cases, make breathing difficult. Large breasts can also dominate a woman's appearance and make her look unbalanced. They can also make participation in exercise difficult or impossible. In psychological terms, ungainly stares and rude comments can make these women self-conscious and prone to low self-esteem.

Although the main aim of the surgery is to reduce the volume and weight of the breast; cosmetic enhancement to fashion a normal shape remains equally important. The techniques have been modified and refined throughout the years in order to improve the safety as well as the aesthetic results.

Are You a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?

While women of all ages can benefit, it's usually rarely performed before the breasts are fully developed. In addition, patients who plan to become pregnant following the procedure should consider postponing the procedure until after pregnancy. If a woman who has had a breast reduction procedure prior to her pregnancy risks permanent re-enlargement of her breasts.

If you are significantly overweight, it will be recommended that you participate in a weight reduction program prior to your surgery in order to yield the best long-term results.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have one or more of the following conditions:

Ø      Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame

Ø      Heavy, pendulous breast with nipple and areolas that point downward

Ø      One breast is much larger than the other

Ø      Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts

Ø      Skin irritation beneath your breasts

Ø      Indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps

Ø      Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts

Your Breast Reduction Consultation and Surgery…

Dr. Javaheri will review your specific anatomy and symptoms.  He will explain in detail the options for breast reduction and the possible incisions which will be used.  It is important that your weight is stabilized and a weight loss program has been attempted.

Prior to surgery, in order to determine the exact position and shape of the proposed breasts, a marking pen is used to draw on the breasts. Once in surgery, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed. The nipple and remaining underlying tissues are moved to a new, higher location. The suture line is situated around the nipple in its new position, and extends vertically down towards the under-breast crease.

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 2.5 -3.5 hours. This procedure can be performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. At the time of your consultation, Dr. Javaheri will determine which option will be best for you.

What to Expect after the Surgery

Following your surgery, bandage dressings will be applied around your breasts. In addition, depending on the technique used, drains may be inserted under the wounds to drain any build-up of blood or fluid that occasionally develops after the surgery. Once the drainage is minimal, often the next day, the drains are removed. Your bandages will be readjusted, and you will be instructed to wear a wireless sports bra for support.

You will also experience extensive swelling and bruising of the breasts following your surgery. The bruising normally lasts approximately two to three weeks. While most of the swelling will have disappeared by this time, some minor swelling may still be present for up to three months.  Complete healing can take up to one year.

Many patients qualify for insurance reimbursement – we can determine this for you ahead of time.  Patient satisfaction after breast reduction is extremely high, and many of our patients are referred by happy patients who have had the surgery.
