Transgender refers to people who identify with a gender identity that is different from their original, or birth, gender.
This applies to either a male or a female. Many transgender people feel uncomfortable with their biological sex and these feelings may begin early in life. Some transgender people opt for sexual re-assignment surgery. This is when the external genitalia, as well as internal organs such as the ovaries, uterus, testicles, are removed and “exchanged” for the opposite sex.
Surgical procedures, for men to women sex-change, involve replacing the penis with a “neo” vagina, removal of testicles, and other “feminizing” procedures. These “feminizing” procedures include shaving of the adam’s apple, to smooth the contours of the neck, facelift, reduction of the nose (rhinoplasty), placement of breast implants or fat grafting for breast enhancement, and even selected liposuction procedures. Procedures for women involve creation of a penis through various multi-stage reconstructive procedures, mastectomy, and many other procedures to create a typical male appearance.
Of course, all patients must undergo hormonal treatments as well as psychological assessment and follow-up before and after any surgical procedures.
